Air Force Iroquois Helicopters

From #3 squadron based at Ohakea, these Iroquois visited Whenuapai for exercises with the Sea Sprites of #6 sqn which is based at Whenuapai, and are see here doing a low pass down runway 07 at West Auckland on a training exercise.

Cessna 210, ZK-VIR

Cessna 210, ZK-VIR:

A Cessna 210, based on the West Coast of the South Island, seen here at West Auckland on a visit to Auckland.

The Cessna 210 has retractable under carriage, and the cabin is pressurised by the engine turbo, which allows it to cruise at high speed above 10,000 ft with both the engine and passengers properly oxygenated. The windows are small because of the cabin pressurisation.

A high wing Tecnam with a cantilevered (no struts) wing. Previously based at Whangarei, ZK-TNM was purchased by a syndicate of West Auckland Aviators and moved to West Auckland in May 2010.

A home built aircraft, the RVs are popular with home builders and are a high perfomance and attractive type of aircraft. Steven Jones ZK-NVS is seen here at Leading Edge being serviced.

Cessna 207, ZK-DAX

Cessna 207, ZK-DAX:

On 30 Dec 1989 ZK-DAX collided with ZK-DQF over Milford Sound, and was damaged beyond repair but was able to land safely.

It's now in final stages of decomposition, having arrived by truck and if it ever does leave, will not be flying out.

Now resting at West Auckland as a source of minor parts.

 

ZK-DTT: 'Wild Thing'

Arriving from Germany as D-MDTT, Jersey Seipel's "Tango Lady" is a 'Wild Thing WT 01', an improved design of the venerable Canadian bush-plane Murphy Rebel (folding wings, beefed-up landing gear & tail, etc.) & registered here in NZ as a class 2 microlight.

The aircraft was converted to NZ specs by Leading Edge Aviation at West Auckland.

The engine is a VW car engine, modified for aviation use with two sparkplugs per cylinder using separate ignition systems, plus other mods to make the engine suitable.

Pietenpol, ZK-PAC:

Nearing completion at West Auckland, ZK-PAC is getting close to its first flight.

The Pietenpol was designed in 1928 as a homebuilt aircraft, and in the 1930s they were usually fitted with Ford Model 'A' engines of 28HP. They were underpowered with this powerplant, and since the 1960s have usually been fitted with a 3L GM Corvair flat six air cooled engine which provides much better reserve power for emergencies. ZK-PAC has a Corvair.

The Malibu has a turbo for the engine, and a pressurised cabin for the passengers, so is able to cruise fast and efficiently at high altitudes.

Previously 'N7321Q' on the USA register, the aircraft was placed on the NZ register as ZK-SDA.

Flown in from the USA by way of Hawaii and Tonga, ZK-SDA arrived in March 2012 and is based at West Auckland Airport.

Piper 'Carbon Cub' ZK-CSS:

A carbon fibre version of the Piper 'cub' design, much loved by a generation or two of aviators. This aircraft is based at Pukekohe east Airfield, and see here on a visit to West Auckland Parakai.

When the photo was taken in July 2012, the aircraft was new, just in from the factory in the USA and fitted with a 180hp motor for great performance.
